Olympiacos ONEX – Pegasos Polichnis 3-2: Olympiacos in the semi-finals of the League Cup

The qualification to the semi-final stage League Cup “Nikos Samaras” secured by Olympiacos ONEX which prevailed with 3-2 sets (19-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 10-25) of the fighting Pegasus in Polichni.

The doubles that competed without Djuric, had Perrin and Atanasievic as protagonists who scored 22 and 20 points respectively, with the Serbian diagonal “cleaning” in the tiebreak. In the knock-out semi-final of the competition, which will take place on Wednesday, November 27, Thrylos will face the winner of the Milos-Panathinaikos match away from home, with the aim of qualifying for the final on December 11.

Checked it out and went ahead!

At the start of the set, the home team had the lead and got to 9-7 when Olympiacos ONEX responded with a 3-0 run to take the lead for the first time at 9-10 with Atanasievic. The doubles then revved up and extended their lead to 12-16 with Travis and +5 for 12-17 with Perrin’s earned block. With another excellent attack by Perrin, the difference increased to +6 for 14-20, followed by 14-21 with Pagenk’s first time. Perrin with another ace scored 16-23 and with a pipe he gave the first set bowl at 18-24 and Koumendakis with a won block out succeeded at 19-25, thanks to which Thrylos took a 1-0 lead in the sets.

Pegasus equalized

The picture was different at the beginning of the 2nd set, after Olympiakos, after 0-1 with Atanasievic, found himself behind in the score with 6-2, at the point where Andrea Gardini called his first time-out. In the development of the set, Pegasos Polichnis maintained the lead in his favor (9-3, 10-5, 14-8) with Olympiakos trying to close the gap and reach 14-10. Perrin made it 17-13, but the hosts then went on a 19-13 run and held onto the lead until the end of the set, reaching 25-17 to level the score at 1-1.

Thrylos regained the lead!

In the 3rd set, the two teams went point by point with Olympiakos leading at 4-5 with a serve by Koumendakis and reaching 6-8 after an ace by Atanasievic. The home team leveled at 8-8, with Koumentakis putting Thrylos back in the driver’s seat for 8-9. +2 brought back after 9-9, Papagelopoulos at 9-11 with Koumendakis then writing 12-14 and Atanasievics at 13-15. The Serbian diagonal from Thrylos increased the lead to +3 for the first time at 14-17 with a winning block and Perrin kept it at 15-18. The +4 came from Pagenk’s block at 15-19 for Olympiakos ONEX who had laid the groundwork to win the 3rd set. The home team dropped to 17-19, but first-year Pagenk posted 17-20 and 18-21. It was 19-22 from a Gatsis serve that went out, and it was the same way at 20-23. With a pipe, Perrin gave away the first set of bowls at 21-24 and he himself ended the set with a block at 21-25 to regain the lead in sets for Thrylos!

New equalizer!

Olympiacos ONEX took a 1-4 lead at the start of the 4th set, but then went on a 5-0 run with Pegasus taking a 6-4 lead and 8-5 in the ensuing set. The champions responded with a 4-0 run of their own and with an ace by Pagenk they went ahead again at 8-9. The “red and white” streak was extended to 6-0 by Atanasievics who with a won block out scored 8-10 and Koumentakis who continued scoring 8-11. The home team responded again and turned the situation around to lead 12-11 and then extended their lead to 20-12. The Reds fell to 20-14 with Perrin and 22-17 with Pagenk, but Pegasus rallied to 25-19 and tied the set again, sending the match to a tiebreak.

Driven by Atanasievic, he “sealed” the qualification!

With two quick attacks by Atanasievics, Olympiacos ONEX took a 0-2 lead in the tiebreak with Pegasus tying the score at 2-2. But from that point on, the champions completely dominated and with Atanasievic as a guide, they lost safety differences. The Serbian diagonal of Thrylos gave the lead again and with a 4-0 run and Pagenk’s ace it was 2-6. The Polichni team reduced to 4-6, but Koumnetakis and Atanasievics increased the difference again for 4-8. With a won block out by Atanasievic and a block by Papagelopoulos, the score was 6-11, while Perrin scored 7-12 with a pipe. Followed by 9-13 by Travica, Atanasievic served up the first match point at 10-14 and Pagenk ended the set with a block at 10-15 to give the win a place in the Final 4 of the League Cup.
