The intention is to invest in clubs, national teams, senior and youth competitions with the aim of having 5,000 professional players and six professional leagues in Europe by 2030.

UEFA will set aside one billion euros in competition revenue for the development of women’s football on the continent over the next six years, the umbrella body of European football announced.

The commitment is part of UEFA’s new strategy to develop women’s football, with money going to clubs, national teams, senior and youth competitions with the aim of having 5,000 professional female players and six professional leagues in Europe by 2030, Reuters reports.

“European women’s football has never been in a better place,” said Nadine Kessler, UEFA’s executive director for women’s football. “Soccer has become a sport for the masses, attracting an ever-growing and diverse fan base and partners who wholeheartedly contribute to its growth.”

Women’s soccer has enjoyed significant growth in revenue and interest in recent years, with the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand generating more than $570 million in revenue.

The Women’s Super League in England also achieved record revenue in the 2022/23 season, with more than a million people attending matches in the country’s top two leagues a season later.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said that the new six-year strategy, called “Unstoppable”, will lay the foundations for unlocking the full potential of women’s football, reports Hina.

“Our commitment to the cause remains as strong as ever. Our mission is simple – to help women’s football gain a prominent place in the European sports community,” he added.
