MotoGP News: Jorge Lorenzo has given his views on his Ducati contract – and denied claims about his huge salary.
Jorge Lorenzo, and previously Valentino Rossi, are renowned MotoGP champions who Ducati relies on to end a long streak without a win. However, both bets failed to pay off, and Lorenzo has detailed how he left Ducati after two boring seasons.
“Ducati lost patience after a year and a half without results,” he was quoted as saying by AS. “They don’t trust me anymore. They didn’t even offer me a million euros when the contract was valid for 12 years. They preferred riders like Danilo Petrucci. I didn’t even get an offer.”
With his future at stake, Lorenzo quickly signed a contract with Honda in 2019. However, that year proved to be his worst year in MotoGP and Lorenzo decided to retire after one season with Honda.
Lorenzo was never able to repeat his glory days at Yamaha, where he won two MotoGP championships. After finishing third in 2017 amidst fierce competition with teammate Rossi, Lorenzo chose to leave Yamaha. “I don’t have much desire. They try harder, and it was very visible in Valencia, more for Valentino than for me.”
Lorenzo’s choice to join Ducati was because of Gigi Dall’Igna. Although Lorenzo came too early for Dall’Igna’s Desmosedici project, the manufacturer would find success years later. “I know that Gigi will make the Ducati the best bike, because he is very stubborn,” said Lorenzo.
“It was like when Lewis Hamilton left McLaren to join Mercedes. A team that had never won anything, but knew that they would be the best car in Formula 1. I had the same intuition as Ducati.”
