Arne Slot made a bold and lighthearted remark about Manchester City’s ongoing financial charges when asked about Mohamed Salah possibly playing his last game against Pep Guardiola’s side at Anfield.
During his press conference on Tuesday at the AXA Training Centre, Slot jokingly referenced City’s 115 alleged breaches of financial rules, following Liverpool’s impressive 2-0 victory over City on Sunday, which extended their lead to nine points at the top of the Premier League.
“It was a joke, I repeat, it was a joke,” Slot clarified after realizing the potential media frenzy his comment could trigger.
Salah played a key role in the win, providing an assist for Cody Gakpo’s opening goal and scoring a penalty in the second half after Luis Diaz was fouled by Stefan Ortega. The Egyptian now has 13 goals in 20 appearances this season. However, his post-match statement to Sky Sports, suggesting it might be his final game against City at Anfield, sparked fresh speculation about his future.
When asked about Salah’s comment ahead of Liverpool’s next match against Newcastle, Slot made another cheeky remark, implying Salah’s words might be connected to City’s legal troubles.
“Maybe Mo knows more about the 115 charges they’re facing, so he expects them not to be in the Premier League next season,” Slot joked.
He quickly added, “This isn’t the place for me to talk about Mo’s contract. I’ve probably said too much already with the joke I made, but let me repeat—it was just a joke.”
Manchester City’s ongoing hearing, which started in September, could result in serious consequences if they are found guilty, ranging from fines to relegation. However, a final verdict is not expected until after the current season, with the legal proceedings possibly extending into next year.
