A lesser-known rule has explained why Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson will only miss one match following his red card against Fulham, despite what initially seemed like a more severe punishment.
Liverpool’s push for the title under manager Arne Slot suffered a setback on Saturday when they drew 2-2 with Fulham at Anfield. An early red card for Robertson left the team down to ten men and shifted the momentum in Fulham’s favor, making it more difficult for the Reds to secure a win.
However, unlike most players who receive a straight red card, Robertson will be banned for just one match due to a specific regulation.
The incident occurred in the 17th minute when Robertson fouled Harry Wilson, a tackle that was judged to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity, resulting in a straight red card.
Typically, a straight red card results in a three-match suspension, but this does not apply to Robertson. According to Premier League rules, a three-match ban is not imposed if the red card is for denying a goalscoring chance.
As a result, Robertson will only miss Liverpool’s League Cup quarter-final against Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium. Interestingly, Slot will also miss that match due to a touchline ban from accumulating three yellow cards.
The good news for Robertson is that he will be available for Liverpool’s upcoming away match at Tottenham Hotspur the following weekend.
After the match, Slot reflected on Robertson’s performance, praising his resilience after taking a heavy knock shortly before the red card. “I think the team showed great character, and Robbo showed the same,” Slot said. “Getting a kick like that, with two studs on the knee, can hurt for a few minutes.”
