Enzo Maresca has kept his defensive rotation relatively stable in the Premier League, with Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana playing more regularly than their teammates. These two have become central figures in the team’s defense, while Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo have struggled to impress the coach and secure consistent first-team spots.
Chelsea are looking to add another reliable center-back to their squad. According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Benfica’s Tomas Araujo is their top target, but they will face competition from Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, who are also interested in the 22-year-old.
Araujo has an £83 million release clause in his contract with Benfica, although it is unclear whether the club will demand the full fee or be open to negotiation. The player’s high salary expectations would also require a significant financial outlay from Chelsea.
If Chelsea qualify for the Champions League next season, it seems unlikely that Maresca would turn to Badiashile or Adarabioyo, given their struggles in the Premier League. This makes signing a new center-back essential, and Araujo’s physicality, strong passing ability, versatility (able to play as a right-back), and impressive skills in aerial duels and set pieces could make him a good fit for the team.
However, Chelsea may decide to pursue a more proven option from the Premier League, such as Marc Guéhi or Jarrad Branthwaite, who could be available next year. This could make them a more attractive option over Araujo, who is still relatively untested at the top level.
