Liverpool increased their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points, with a game in hand, following a commanding 3-1 victory over Leicester City on Boxing Day.
The win came after both Manchester City and Chelsea dropped points earlier in the day—City were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton, while Chelsea lost 2-1 to Fulham—allowing Liverpool to seize the opportunity to strengthen their grip on the title race.
Leicester made an early breakthrough at Anfield, with Jordan Ayew scoring within the first 10 minutes, but Liverpool quickly regained control. Despite hitting the woodwork twice in the first half, it was Cody Gakpo who brought them level in stoppage time, curling a stunning shot into the top corner to make it 1-1 just before halftime.
The second half saw Liverpool come out with more intensity, and four minutes after the restart, Curtis Jones put them ahead with a composed finish from close range, assisted by Alexis Mac Allister. Gakpo thought he had scored a third, but his effort was ruled out by VAR after a lengthy review. Mohamed Salah then sealed the victory with a goal in the 82nd minute, firing in from a tight angle to make it 3-1.

Salah’s goal capped another outstanding display, taking his Premier League tally to 16 goals and 11 assists in just 17 matches this season. In all competitions, he now has 19 goals and 15 assists from 25 games.
After the match, Salah was asked about his future but kept his cards close to his chest. When questioned, he simply told Express, “I wish fans a Happy New Year and I will see them at the next home game.” This marked a shift from his usual openness regarding contract discussions.
Reports suggest that Liverpool is close to securing a new two-year deal with Salah, but concerns persist among fans. Given his key role in the team, his departure would leave a significant void, and supporters are understandably anxious about the potential loss of their star player.
