Curtis Jones revealed that he received a congratulatory message from former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp after the team’s 3-1 win over Leicester City, a match that marked Jones’ 100th Premier League appearance. Notably, Jones also scored the goal that put Liverpool ahead in the game. Reflecting on the message, Jones expressed surprise and pride at being recognized by the man who gave him his Premier League debut in 2019.
Although Klopp left Liverpool last summer, he remains closely connected to the club and its players. He is set to begin a new role with the Red Bull group next week. Jones credited Klopp for laying the foundation for Liverpool’s ongoing success under current manager Arne Slot, highlighting the strong groundwork Klopp put in place during his tenure at Anfield.
Jones admitted he wasn’t aware of his milestone until after the game. “I usually message my family after games,” he told Match of the Day. “I saw a text from Klopp saying, ‘Congratulations on 100 games and here’s to 500.’ I was confused at first but then checked and realized. It’s something to be proud of.” He acknowledged Klopp’s role in building the team, saying, “He’s the one who built this team. The foundation was set, and Arne Slot has continued building on it.”
Looking ahead, Jones emphasized the challenges of the season and the importance of staying focused. “There are so many games to play, and whether it’s a team at the top, middle, or bottom of the table, it’s always a challenge. The goal is to try and win every game, and if we do that, we all know what can happen at the end of the season.”
Jones also reflected on Liverpool’s performance against Leicester, praising the team’s resilience and tactical adjustments. “It was a tough game,” he explained. “They sat back and defended well, which made it hard to find space. In the first half, we crossed the ball too much, which played into their plan. But in the second half, we adjusted, kept possession, and that’s when the goals started coming.”
The midfielder also highlighted Liverpool’s mentality and determination. “When we go a goal down, we don’t panic. We push to equalize before halftime and come out strong in the second half to take the lead. Our mentality is simple: we want to win every game.”
