AC Milan are reportedly in direct negotiations with Liverpool over a potential January move for Darwin Nunez, according to Milan TMN (via TeamTalk).
The Italian club is said to have made an offer for a €5 million loan fee with an obligation to buy Nunez for €45 million at the end of the season. Liverpool are reportedly considering the proposal, given Nunez’s struggles to find consistency since his high-profile transfer from Benfica in the summer of 2022.
After a standout season at Benfica, where he scored 34 goals in 41 appearances, Nunez has had difficulty replicating that form at Liverpool. In his first Premier League season, he netted just nine goals in 29 appearances, failing to live up to his €75 million price tag. His second season showed some improvement with 11 goals and eight assists in 36 matches, but inconsistency and missed chances have made him a frustrating figure for supporters.
Under manager Arne Slot, Nunez has often been used as a squad player rather than a regular starter, with Diogo Jota favored early in the season. Although Nunez received more playing time after Jota’s injury, he struggled to make a significant impact, and Slot later turned to Luis Diaz in a false nine role, which has proven effective.
While Nunez’s raw talent is clear, as seen during his time at Benfica and in brief moments at Liverpool, his lack of confidence and inconsistency in both linking up play and finishing chances have made him hard to rely on.
AC Milan’s offer presents Nunez with the opportunity to reignite his career in Serie A, where his physicality and direct playing style might be better suited. Milan are eager to strengthen their attack as they pursue both domestic and European success. The structured loan deal would allow both clubs to evaluate the arrangement before making a permanent commitment.
Despite Nunez’s potential, Liverpool appear open to parting ways with the 24-year-old, with transfer expert David Lynch suggesting that a departure at the end of the season is likely.
