Liverpool are reportedly willing to sell Darwin Núñez during the January transfer window and have already identified a potential replacement. Since his £85m move from Benfica in 2022, Núñez has struggled to meet expectations and has fallen out of favor with new manager Arne Slot. Although he started the season as a regular, his place in the lineup has since been taken by Diogo Jota and then Luis Díaz as both players regained fitness and form.
Reports suggest Liverpool are open to accepting an offer for Núñez, with AC Milan said to have made a proposal this week involving a loan with an obligation to buy in the summer. Slot is reportedly unimpressed with Núñez’s performances in training and matches, which has led to his exclusion from the starting XI in recent games.
If Núñez is sold, Liverpool’s top target to replace him is Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram. While Newcastle’s Alexander Isak is also a potential option, his high price may prove prohibitive. Thuram, who has scored 28 goals in 68 appearances for Inter, has a release clause of €85m (£70.5m), which is more affordable than Isak’s potential transfer fee. Inter may also be open to negotiating a fee closer to the clause amount.
Despite the interest, it’s considered more likely that any deals involving Núñez or Thuram will occur in the summer rather than January.
