Real Madrid is extremely frustrated with the way refereeing has been handled in Spain for decades, particularly with the current use of VAR.
According to José Félix Díaz, a journalist from Marca, FIFA believes they can prove that VAR was improperly used in the red card given to Vinícius at Mestalla. FIFA argues that VAR has deviated from its original intent and that its current application is overly intrusive. They believe it’s essential to reevaluate its use to make it clearer and less interventionist.
Real Madrid is pleased that FIFA shares their concerns, as they feel outraged by the situation. “They believe that what happened at Mestalla further supports their call for a complete overhaul of refereeing,” explains Díaz, adding that Real Madrid officials made this clear to Gianni Infantino in a recent meeting in Doha.
The club is also skeptical that the change in the president of the Spanish Football Federation will bring any real reform.
They believe it’s urgent for the Technical Committee of Referees to be entirely revamped, as it currently lacks credibility and the quality of refereeing is subpar. So far, no other club has publicly echoed these concerns.
