Chelsea is reportedly considering bringing Trevoh Chalobah back from his loan at Crystal Palace in January due to a growing defensive injury crisis, which has left the team lacking reliable options in defense.
The situation worsened when Wesley Fofana suffered a major setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury, potentially ruling him out for the rest of the season. Benoit Badiashile is also sidelined with an injury and won’t be fit to return until at least February, according to head coach Enzo Maresca.
Meanwhile, Tosin Adarabioyo and Axel Disasi have struggled to maintain consistent performances in Fofana’s absence. As a result, 18-year-old Josh Acheampong was promoted to the first team, making his Premier League debut alongside Levi Colwill in defense against Crystal Palace.
Despite Acheampong earning praise from Maresca for his standout performance at Selhurst Park, the manager plans to gradually integrate the young defender into the senior squad.
In response to these challenges, Chelsea is reportedly considering activating a break clause in Chalobah’s loan agreement with Crystal Palace, which would allow him to return to Stamford Bridge halfway through his season-long loan.
According to Simon Johnson of The Athletic, this option is being seriously explored as Chelsea seeks immediate reinforcements for their defense.
Chalobah has impressed during his time at Crystal Palace, showcasing his defensive skills and potentially earning a spot in Maresca’s plans at Chelsea. His experience and quality make him a strong candidate to provide the defensive reinforcement Chelsea urgently needs.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Aaron Anselmino, who has just returned from a loan at Boca Juniors, has rejoined the Chelsea squad.
His future at the club remains unclear, with the possibility of him either staying or going on another loan to a European club. Maresca has emphasized the importance of giving Anselmino time to adjust to life in England and the team’s playing style, with an FA Cup appearance against Morecambe expected.
On the other hand, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has expressed a desire to keep Chalobah, praising his contributions to the team’s campaign so far.
After a 1-1 draw with Chelsea, Glasner pointed out Chelsea’s depth in defense and questioned whether they truly needed further reinforcements. He also reaffirmed that Chalobah has been performing well and remains an important part of Palace’s plans.
