“Elon Musk’s Reported Interest in Buying Premier League Club ‘Confirmed’ by Family Source”
Elon Musk’s potential acquisition of a Premier League club, particularly Liverpool, has been confirmed by a close family source.
Musk, the world’s richest individual with a fortune estimated at $425.2 billion (£339.3 billion), could be eyeing a significant investment in English football. Known for his leadership at SpaceX and Tesla, and for owning the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk’s wealth could facilitate such a high-profile purchase.
Recent reports from the Weekend Sport suggested that Musk is considering a bid to buy Liverpool, a club with personal significance to him. His paternal grandmother, Cora Robinson, was born in Liverpool, strengthening his familial ties to the region. Robinson was born in Mossley Hill in 1923 before moving to South Africa, where she married Musk’s grandfather, Walter Musk, in 1944.
Errol Musk, Elon’s father, has since addressed these rumors, adding more credibility to the speculation. When asked about Elon’s interest in purchasing Liverpool, Errol joked on Times Radio, “I can’t comment on that, they’ll raise the price,” but then confirmed, “Yes, he has expressed a desire [to buy it], but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it.” He went on to acknowledge that owning Liverpool would be a natural aspiration, saying, “Anybody would want to – so would I.”
Elon Musk also spoke about the personal connection to Liverpool, adding, “His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives there. We were fortunate to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool.”
Liverpool is valued at approximately £4.2 billion, but it is unclear whether its current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), would agree to sell at that price.
In 2022, Todd Boehly’s consortium acquired Chelsea for £4.25 billion, which could set a benchmark for Liverpool’s potential sale.
FSG’s principal owner, John W. Henry, has downplayed the possibility of selling the club in the near future. In response to takeover speculation, Henry stated in 2023, “Are we selling LFC? No,” and added that while discussions with investors are ongoing, it is unlikely to lead to a full sale.
FSG also agreed to sell a minority stake in Liverpool, valued between £82 million and £164 million, to Dynasty Equity, a global sports investment firm.
