Kobbie Mainoo, a promising talent at Manchester United, has reportedly requested a significant salary increase in order to reject Chelsea’s interest and sign a new contract with the club.
Mainoo’s current deal runs until the summer of 2027, but following his impressive performances during the 2023/24 season, United is keen to extend his contract, according to the Manchester Evening News.
However, Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler has revealed that Chelsea is closely monitoring the situation and could make a move if Mainoo does not agree to new terms with United.
At 19 years old, Mainoo is reportedly uncertain about his future at United, despite the recent appointment of manager Ruben Amorim and some encouraging moments, like the 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
While United fans may not expect Mainoo to leave, The Athletic’s David Ornstein highlighted that only two players, Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo, are currently considered off-limits for transfers.
Further reports from the Daily Mail have raised concerns over Mainoo’s contract status, with speculation suggesting that both he and Alejandro Garnacho, whose deal runs until 2028, might not be entirely safe from being sold.
As homegrown players, their departures could generate ‘pure profit’ for the club, helping meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations.
The Manchester Evening News previously noted that United aims to comply with financial rules after paying compensation to Erik ten Hag and Sporting for Amorim, which may limit their spending in January.
If United hopes to secure Mainoo’s future, the Daily Mail claims he is seeking a weekly salary of around £200,000. It remains unclear whether this figure is a negotiation tactic or his genuine demand, but the ball now seems to be in United’s court.
