Liverpool Reject Record-Breaking Bid for Darwin Núñez, Exceeding His Initial Transfer Fee
Darwin Núñez continues to be linked with a potential exit from Liverpool.
Reports indicate that Liverpool has turned down a substantial offer for Núñez, with ongoing rumors about the club’s pursuit of promising forward Stefanos Tzimas.
Liverpool secured Núñez from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for an initial £64 million, a move seen as a strong investment following his impressive goal-scoring run in Portugal.
However, despite a remarkable 34-goal season at Benfica, Núñez has struggled to adjust to the pace of the Premier League. The striker himself has admitted the challenges of adapting to the league’s demands.
“It’s a huge change,” Núñez told Sky Sports. “The league here is stronger, more competitive. I didn’t expect it to be this intense.”
He added, “It’s been a real eye-opener. Every team in this league has earned its place. The football is tougher than in Portugal, and it’s much more competitive. You don’t have much time on the ball.”
At times, Núñez has shown his potential, such as his memorable substitute performance against Newcastle, where he came on to score two late goals. However, after just two Premier League goals this season, it seems his time at Liverpool may be coming to a close.
Reports suggest Liverpool rejected a verbal bid of approximately £70 million from Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal, according to Sam Maguire of Anfield Watch. Al Hilal, coached by former Benfica manager Jorge Jesus, is reportedly seeking a replacement for Neymar, who is rumored to be returning to Santos.
Liverpool, however, is said to be holding out for £75 million for Núñez. Michael Edwards, the club’s director, is reportedly overseeing negotiations to secure that fee.
Meanwhile, Liverpool has started discussions with German side FC Nürnberg about a potential summer move for the highly-rated Greek forward Stefanos Tzimas.
Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg reported that a phone call took place recently between Liverpool and FC Nürnberg, with the Reds eager to bring the 19-year-old to Anfield.
Tzimas, who has scored eight goals and provided two assists in 15 appearances this season, is currently on loan at FC Nürnberg from Greek club PAOK. FC Nürnberg plans to trigger a £15.1 million buy option for Tzimas, with the intention of selling him in the summer.
Liverpool will face significant competition from several Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Brighton, as well as multiple Bundesliga teams, who are also eyeing the talented forward.
