After Liverpool’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Lille on Tuesday, Harvey Elliott confirmed he will remain at the club, putting an end to recent transfer speculation.
Elliott, who came on as a substitute, scored the decisive goal in the 67th minute, ensuring Liverpool’s perfect record in the tournament with seven wins from seven.
Elliott, who has had limited playing time this season due to injury and stiff competition for spots, was recently linked to clubs like Brighton and Borussia Dortmund.
Following his goal, Elliott made a gesture placing his hand across his throat, a clear response to the transfer rumors. Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, he clarified his future: “I’m not leaving. This is my team, my club, and I’m a huge fan.”
He added that while he hadn’t paid much attention to the speculation, he had heard about it from friends. “It’s always going to happen in January, especially after being out for a while and not playing as much as I want,” he said.
Liverpool had initially signed Elliott for around £1.5 million, with the potential for up to £2.8 million in bonuses. Reports suggest that the club would demand a fee between £35 million and £40 million if they were to sell him.
Despite limited appearances, Elliott’s manager, Arne Slot, acknowledged the challenges of returning to full fitness after such a long injury layoff.
“It’s not easy to come back to your best immediately, especially in this league with its intensity and quality,” Slot said. “We have to balance giving players like Harvey the time they need to get back to full form while ensuring we continue to win.”
