Ancelotti apologizes to one of Real Madrid’s stars ahead of tonight’s Salzburg match in the Champions League

Real Madrid is set to face Salzburg today in the second-to-last match of the Champions League group stage.

The team will be without Lucas Vazquez, who is suspended due to accumulating yellow cards. Consequently, another player will need to make way in the starting lineup.

According to Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Fede Valverde will step into Vazquez’s defensive role, following recent training sessions where the Uruguayan midfielder was tested in that position. Ancelotti acknowledged this decision, telling Valverde, a key team leader: “I know you don’t like playing there…” Nevertheless, Valverde expressed his full commitment, showing a willingness to play wherever the coach deems necessary.

Valverde has demonstrated that he can be effective as a right-back due to his speed, strength, dribbling skills, precise ball striking, and solid defensive abilities. While his move to defense could impact the team’s midfield dynamics, Ancelotti is confident Valverde can excel in this role.

Raul Asensio, traditionally a central defender, remains another option, though he has yet to fully prove himself in this new role. To achieve their goal, Real Madrid must win the remaining matches and score as many goals as possible, especially since they no longer have total control over their fate. Ancelotti will be relying on Kylian Mbappé, who has been in outstanding form in recent games.
