Gary Neville Criticizes Caicedo and Fernandez for Failing to Seize Control in Crucial Loss That Could Impact Chelsea’s Champions League Hopes

On the Gary Neville Podcast, the former Manchester United defender was critical of the two midfielders, expressing his frustration over their inability to take charge in the second half. He questioned whether the high-priced players were justifying their hefty price tags.
“I expected Chelsea to come out strong in the second half, especially after I thought Maresca would be upset at halftime for letting City back into the game,” Neville said. “But there was no response. These midfielders, with their big price tags and reputations, should have seized the game. They didn’t do that.”
Caicedo and Fernández, both signed for significant sums, were expected to be the foundation of Chelsea’s midfield, controlling the tempo and orchestrating play. However, against a Manchester City side known for high pressing and dominating possession, Chelsea’s midfielders seemed overrun and unable to control the match.
Neville expressed disappointment at Chelsea’s lack of a response after City equalized, pointing out that the midfielders missed an opportunity to lead and regain control.
“I’m not criticizing them overall because they’ve had a good season, but I’m frustrated with what I saw,” Neville added. “They’ll look back and think they could’ve done more, and that’s the worst feeling. It could cost them a Champions League spot next season.”
Chelsea’s inability to hold onto their early advantage could have significant consequences for their season. Now sitting in sixth place in the Premier League, their Champions League hopes are in jeopardy. The absence of leadership from their big-money midfield signings may haunt them as they aim for a top-four finish and a place in next season’s Champions League.
Neville’s frustration was evident as he discussed the missed opportunity. “It could cost them a Champions League spot next season. They should have sent a stronger message to City, but they didn’t,” he said. “I’m not a Chelsea fan, but as a football fan, I’d be deflated if that was my team.”
