Liverpool fans have criticized striker Darwin Nunez after an incident following the 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Sunday.
The match, held at Anfield, ended in a tense stalemate, with United initially taking the lead through Lisandro Martinez before Liverpool equalized with goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. However, a late goal from Amad Diallo leveled the score.
After the match, Nunez, who had come on as a substitute in the 60th minute, swapped shirts with his Uruguayan teammate Manuel Ugarte. He was then seen making heart gestures towards the crowd as he walked off the pitch, which didn’t sit well with some fans.
Many took to social media to express their frustration, with one person commenting: “Nunez at full time, read the room ffs.” Another fan added: “I’ve been laughing at this nonstop. Brother played badly, got himself suspended, did hearts after the game, and was holding a United shirt. I genuinely can’t support him anymore.”
However, other supporters defended Nunez, pointing out that he wasn’t the only player to make such gestures and that he often shows love for his family in this way after matches.
One fan noted: “Many players and the manager were doing the same towards their families,” while another said, “He does the heart to his family after every game, there’s nothing wrong with it.”
Nunez, who has faced criticism for his performances this season, will miss Liverpool’s upcoming match against Nottingham Forest due to a suspension after receiving his fifth yellow card of the campaign for a reckless challenge on United’s Matthijs de Ligt.
