“Virgil van Dijk ‘Offered’ to Top European Giant Amid Uncertainty Over Liverpool Future”
Virgil van Dijk’s representative reportedly approached a major European club last summer with an offer for the Liverpool star, although the proposal was rejected, according to recent reports.
As Van Dijk enters the final months of his contract at Liverpool, speculation regarding his future has been mounting. The Dutch defender, alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is still in negotiations over a new deal at Anfield.
Spanish outlet Relevo claims that Van Dijk’s camp reached out to Real Madrid, expressing his openness to a move to the Spanish giants in the summer of 2025. However, Real Madrid is said to have declined the offer, citing concerns over the 33-year-old’s age and physical condition as they look to recruit players aligned with their long-term strategy.
Since his record-breaking £75 million transfer from Southampton in January 2018, Van Dijk has been a cornerstone of Liverpool’s defense.
This season, he has been in strong form, playing 25 matches across all competitions as Liverpool remain competitive on multiple fronts.
After Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United, Van Dijk was asked about his contract situation, responding: “Nothing.” He added, “I don’t think [there will be an update soon], but I am calm about it. We’ll see what happens in the future. Right now, my focus is on the team and the upcoming game against Spurs.”
Manager Arne Slot has expressed no concerns about Van Dijk’s contract, continuing to rely on the center-back throughout the season. Slot commented in November: “[The] contract situation becomes a problem only if players stop performing. Virgil is in a good place and playing well.”
As contract talks continue, Van Dijk’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain, with the prospect of becoming a free agent growing nearer.
