Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, has put an end to speculation about the club’s goalkeeping situation, announcing that Filip Jorgensen is now the team’s first-choice goalkeeper, replacing Robert Sanchez. Sanchez was dropped after a series of costly mistakes.
At the start of the season, Sanchez was Chelsea’s preferred goalkeeper, but following several critical errors in key matches, Maresca decided a change was necessary. As a result, Jorgensen made his Premier League debut in Chelsea’s recent match against West Ham, with fans eager to see if the young keeper could prove himself.
However, confusion arose when Sanchez unexpectedly returned to the lineup for Chelsea’s FA Cup match, prompting speculation that Maresca might rotate goalkeepers based on performance. Maresca addressed this issue in a press conference, explaining that Jorgensen’s inclusion wasn’t solely based on form but also to give Sanchez time to recover mentally and physically. He emphasized that the goalkeeping position wouldn’t be rotated from match to match for stability’s sake.
“The decision to start Filip [Jorgensen] was also about giving Robert [Sanchez] time to regain his composure mentally and physically. The plan is not to alternate goalkeepers regularly,” Maresca stated.
He confirmed that Jorgensen is now Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper, adding: “In our last Premier League match against West Ham, Filip played, and Robert featured in the FA Cup. But for now, Filip is our first-choice.”
Unless Jorgensen’s form significantly drops, Sanchez is expected to play mainly in the Conference League, as Chelsea has already been eliminated from both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. However, if Jorgensen struggles, Chelsea may reconsider their goalkeeping approach.
