A well-known Liverpool journalist has shared new information about a crucial player’s future, and it’s not about Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, or Trent Alexander-Arnold. Although the contracts of these three stars expire at the end of the season and there’s speculation about their potential departures without a transfer fee, it’s not their futures that are currently causing the most concern.
Salah, 32, has been especially vocal about his future, yet continues to perform exceptionally well, with 30 goals and 21 assists in 38 appearances this season. He recently set six records in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad, which helped the team extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, 11 points ahead of Arsenal.
With the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle and a Champions League last-16 tie on the horizon, Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reasons to be optimistic. However, the contract situations of Alexander-Arnold, 26, Van Dijk, 33, and Salah are clearly on his mind, as he aims to avoid a similar scenario with his players next year.
One player whose contract situation is also causing concern is French center-back Ibrahima Konate. Despite the club reportedly offering him new terms, Konate’s current deal is set to expire in June 2026, and he has yet to sign an extension.
According to Paul Joyce of The Times, “whispers” are circulating about interest from top European clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. Real Madrid, in particular, has been dealing with a defensive injury crisis, with players like Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, and Eder Militao all suffering long-term injuries this season. Similarly, PSG, while having veteran Marquinhos as a mainstay, could be looking to add another defender to complement the Brazilian.
Konate, 25, addressed the rumors during a press conference last month, confirming that he had been offered a new deal, but when asked if he was close to signing it, he said, “Yes,” adding, “This is another conversation.”
Konate has played 29 matches for Liverpool this season and remains a key part of the team’s solid defensive partnership with Van Dijk.
