Salah, who played a key role in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City with a goal and an assist, has bolstered his case as a top contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or. However, following the match, former Reds defender Carragher sparked debate by suggesting that AFCON is not viewed as a significant tournament, a statement that drew heavy criticism from fans and pundits.
A four-time AFCON participant, Salah has guided Egypt to two finals—losing to Cameroon in 2017 and Senegal in 2021. Despite these disappointments, he remains determined to secure the title, emphasizing how important it would be for him to win the trophy with his country.
Reflecting on his AFCON 2024 participation, Salah expressed his pride in representing Egypt:
“It’s a great feeling every time you step on the field with the national team jersey. It’s something I cannot take for granted. I am just happy to be there, happy to play in the tournament. I want to win this competition. I would love to win it.”
With the 2025 AFCON set to begin in December, Egypt is currently considered one of the strong contenders, ranked alongside Algeria as second favorites behind Morocco.
Despite his undeniable international impact, Carragher suggested that Salah’s AFCON performances might not be as significant when it comes to discussions about the world’s best player.
“I think the problem [is], the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such, or maybe not got a great chance of winning,” Carragher argued.
Even amid the ongoing debate, Salah remains a leading candidate for the Ballon d’Or, thanks to his outstanding form for Liverpool this season.
