Alexis Mac Allister has provided an update regarding the injuries he sustained during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City.
The win at the Etihad Stadium was pivotal, extending Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to 11 points. While Mo Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai received much of the credit for their goals, the team’s defensive resilience, under Arne Slot’s leadership, was essential in neutralizing City’s offensive threats.
Mac Allister played a crucial role in the midfield, using his experience to help push Liverpool closer to securing the title. However, during the first half, he required medical attention after a collision with City’s Omar Marmoush, who accidentally landed on him after a disallowed goal. Though feeling dazed, Mac Allister continued playing after being cleared by the medical team.
Injury Update
As reported by The Times, the Argentine midfielder left the Etihad with a “swollen cheek and a black eye,” later sharing an image on Instagram showing the extent of his injuries.
Mac Allister explained, “When Marmoush scored the disallowed goal, he landed on me, and I hit the floor. I felt a bit dizzy, but it’s just one of those things that happen.”
Reflecting on the match, Mac Allister added, “It was definitely an important win. Playing against a team like City, you always want to come out on top. Maybe we didn’t control possession as we wanted, but we defended well. There’s still a long way to go, though—we may be 11 points ahead, but City has a game in hand, and tough matches are coming.”
Looking Ahead
Liverpool now prepares for their next match against Newcastle United, with hopes that Mac Allister will be fit to play. The midfielder has been vital in Liverpool’s title push, contributing four goals and four assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.
Head coach Arne Slot recently praised Mac Allister’s consistency, stating, “I can’t recall a poor performance from him—he’s incredibly reliable. He may not score as frequently as Mo [Salah], Cody [Gakpo], or Lucho [Diaz], but he plays a vital role in our game, both defensively and in linking up play.”
Slot also mentioned that a brief suspension earlier in the season might have helped Mac Allister’s form in the long run, ensuring he remains a key figure for Liverpool as they approach a crucial phase of the campaign.
