The surprise announcement stunned many fans. Graham reveals how Liverpool almost sold Salah a few years ago.

Former Liverpool director Ian Graham has confessed that he initially believed Mohamed Salah didn’t deserve a new contract in 2022. However, he was later convinced otherwise by the data.

“I was involved in the work for his last contract extension, which runs through to this summer,” Graham explained. “At the time, I was leaning towards not recommending an extension for players of his age. But the strength of the data made me reconsider and take a more objective view, and sometimes the results can surprise you.”

He continued, “When players like Salah experience a decline, it’s typically a reduction in minutes played rather than a decrease in quality. It’s more about physical fitness than a decline in skill.”

Graham concluded, “In the summer of 2022, I was surprised by the data suggesting we should extend Salah’s contract. It was a tough decision, and I’m glad I’m not the one handling that now!”

Recently, Salah hinted at his future, sharing that he wants fans to remember his commitment to the club over the past eight years. “I gave it all to the fans, I gave it all to the city,” he stated.
