Barcelona might have advanced to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2019, but their 3–1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund has left internal questions lingering—especially with the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid fast approaching.
Although Barça progressed 5–3 on aggregate, the mood in the dressing room was tense post-match. Players like Jules Kounde, Frenkie de Jong, and Robert Lewandowski voiced concerns about the performance. Head coach Hansi Flick had to step in and remind the squad of the importance of reaching the semi-finals.
One positive from the night was the return of Dani Olmo, who made a late appearance after recovering from injury. With the final on the horizon, Flick is expected to ease Olmo back into form with limited minutes in La Liga games against Celta Vigo and Mallorca.
However, Olmo’s place in the starting XI for the final is still up in the air. According to Sport, Flick is leaning toward starting Fermin Lopez in Seville, possibly using Olmo as an impact sub—just like in the previous Clasico at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Fermin Lopez has become a regular fixture in recent weeks, filling in amid Gavi’s absence. Though goals have been scarce, his energy and work rate have impressed Flick.
Notably, Lopez also started the last Clasico in Madrid alongside Marc Casado. In that game, de Jong came off the bench for Lopez and helped inspire a comeback that led to a 4–0 Barça win.
With the Copa del Rey final looming, Flick’s midfield choices could be key to Barcelona’s hopes of lifting silverware.
