Cody Gakpo May Face FA Disciplinary Action for Celebration During Liverpool Title Win

During the celebrations following Liverpool’s second-ever Premier League title win, Cody Gakpo may be subject to disciplinary action from the Football Association (FA) for violating a lesser-known rule, as reported by The Telegraph.
New Liverpool manager Arne Slot secured the league title in his first season with a convincing 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, making him the fifth manager to win the Premier League in his debut campaign. The historic stadium was electric, with fans celebrating the title clinch with four matches still remaining.
However, Gakpo’s post-goal celebration could lead to repercussions. After scoring Liverpool’s third goal, the Dutch forward lifted his jersey to reveal an undershirt with the message, “I Belong to Jesus.” While reminiscent of Kaka’s famous gesture in the 2007 Champions League final, the action drew a yellow card from referee Thomas Bramall and might lead to further consequences.
According to Law 4 of the International Football Association Board’s rules, players are banned from displaying political, religious, or personal messages on their gear. The regulation states that any breach may result in sanctions from the competition organizers, the national football association, or FIFA.
As of now, the FA is reportedly reviewing the incident, and Gakpo could face retrospective punishment or a possible ban. Regardless, he is still expected to play against Chelsea on May 4.
This situation mirrors a recent case involving Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who was twice cautioned for writing Christian messages on his armband during the Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign.
