Enzo Maresca Unveils Tactical Shift to Keep Reece James Fit and Effective

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has outlined a new tactical approach aimed at helping Reece James stay fit while maximizing his influence on the pitch.

James, widely regarded as one of Chelsea’s most talented players, has struggled with recurring injuries that have limited his availability. To address this, Maresca is adjusting James’ role, occasionally deploying him in midfield or as an inverted full-back to ease the physical demands of constantly running up and down the flank.

“Full-backs expend more energy when covering large distances up and down the pitch,” Maresca explained, highlighting how this shift could help James manage his workload more efficiently.

The Chelsea captain has already been seen drifting into central positions during games, a move designed to take advantage of his technical ability while reducing strain on his body. With a history of hamstring and knee issues, managing his fitness is a top priority for the club.

James’ versatility—combining defensive strength, attacking flair, and precise passing—makes him a key asset when available. However, last season, injuries restricted him to just 11 league appearances, a major setback for Chelsea.

Maresca remains optimistic about this strategy, stating, “For sure, the way we are using him in some games can help… We are happy, and hopefully, this approach keeps him fit.”

If successful, this tactical shift could ensure James remains a consistent presence for Chelsea, allowing him to lead the team and showcase his full potential throughout the season.
