Despite progressing to the semifinals with a 5-3 aggregate score, Flick was clearly displeased with his team’s overall performance—particularly their defensive lapses.
Mistakes by players such as Wojciech Szczęsny, who conceded a penalty, and Ronald Araújo, who struggled defensively, seemed to especially frustrate the coach. Flick’s visible anger on the sidelines suggested it might have been the most disappointing first half he’s experienced since taking charge.
Though he refrained from publicly criticizing any individual players after the match, his body language spoke volumes. He emphasized the need for defensive improvements as they prepare to face either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich in the semifinals.
