Martin Zubimendi could be on the verge of reigniting a potential move to Liverpool, months after initially turning the club down. The Real Sociedad midfielder, who helped Spain win Euro 2024, reportedly regrets rejecting Liverpool’s offer last summer.
At the time, the Reds were ready to activate his €60 million (£50.5 million / $66.9 million) release clause and triple his wages. Zubimendi was scheduled for a medical at Anfield, but his agent later contacted Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, to pull the plug on the move.
The decision was a blow for Liverpool, who then opted not to sign an alternative and instead reassessed their long-term strategy.
Now, according to *Estadio Deportivo*, Zubimendi may be having second thoughts. The midfielder is reportedly open to reviving the transfer for two key reasons. First, Real Sociedad have struggled badly this season, currently sitting 16th in La Liga after just six matches. The departures of key players like Robin Le Normand and Mikel Merino have left the team weakened, and Zubimendi is said to be disillusioned with the situation.
Second, despite being promised a new deal after rejecting Liverpool, Zubimendi is still on the same contract he signed back in October 2022—earning just under £50,000 a week. The club’s failure to follow through may be pushing him closer to the exit.
With Liverpool reportedly willing to double their investment and raise the deal to around £91 million, the door could be wide open for Zubimendi to make the switch in the January transfer window.
