Reports are growing stronger that Xabi Alonso could become Real Madrid’s next manager, especially with current coach Carlo Ancelotti expected to leave at the end of the season. Despite being under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2026, Alonso has a clause allowing him to join a former club—such as Real Madrid—if they approach him.
If Ancelotti does exit, former Madrid player and current director Santiago Solari is likely to take interim charge for the Club World Cup. Alonso would then reportedly assume the managerial role for the 2025-26 season.
Spanish outlet Diario AS claims Alonso has already earmarked three players he’d like to bring with him to Madrid. Two are currently under his management at Leverkusen: midfielder Florian Wirtz and defender Jonathan Tah. The third is Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, who has a €60 million release clause and is seen as a long-term replacement for the retired Toni Kroos.
Tah could join for free as his deal expires this summer, while Wirtz remains under contract until 2027 and is valued at €140 million, per Transfermarkt.
Meanwhile, Ancelotti’s expected move to manage Brazil’s national team is reportedly on the rocks. According to Relevo, negotiations have stalled, and the CBF is running out of patience. Club president Florentino Perez is unwilling to pay an early termination fee, especially after learning of Ancelotti’s Brazil talks.
If things fall through, Brazil may instead pursue Al-Hilal boss Jorge Jesus.
