Mikel Arteta’s Misguided Liverpool Title Comment Backfires
Despite Liverpool being crowned Premier League champions and having a Champions League semi-final on the horizon, Mikel Arteta continues to downplay their success.
Speaking ahead of the match in Paris, Arteta commented:
“We’re aiming to win trophies this season. Success is about timing—being in the right place at the right time. Liverpool clinched the league with fewer points than we had in the past two seasons. Yet, we claimed two Premier League titles during that period.”
He added:
“We hope tomorrow in Paris is our moment. We’re just one win away from the final. Let’s prove ourselves on the pitch instead of talking.”
Arteta was referring to Arne Slot’s Liverpool side securing the title after beating Spurs and reaching 82 points. While Arsenal collected 89 points last season and 84 the year before, the current season is still ongoing. Liverpool could still surpass both those totals with three games left.
Arteta appeared to suggest that Liverpool’s title win was less deserved due to a lower points tally, overlooking the fact that the season isn’t over yet. His remarks reveal a possible misjudgment, as Liverpool could still finish with more points than Arsenal’s recent campaigns.
Meanwhile, Arteta’s players have maintained humility and shown respect toward Liverpool. However, Arteta himself has once again made a public misstep, struggling to give credit where it’s due.
