Liverpool’s Chase for Julián Álvarez Hits Major Roadblocks

Liverpool’s Chase for Julián Álvarez Hits Major Roadblocks

In a story that has captured attention across the football world, early reports today claimed Lierpool was closing in on signing Argentine striker Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid. However, these reports appear to be inaccurate.

Álvarez moved from Manchester City to Atlético in August 2024 for a potential €95 million (£81.8 million) and has since established himself as a crucial part of Diego Simeone’s team. The 25-year-old has scored 23 goals and assisted five more in 44 matches this season, underlining his value to the Spanish side.

Interest from Liverpool in Álvarez isn’t new, with his agent Fernando Hidalgo confirming that the club had shown interest last summer. Yet, Atlético’s sporting director, Carlos Busero, dismissed current rumors, stating:

“Claims of Liverpool making an official bid for Julián Álvarez are false. These are just rumors. Álvarez is central to our plans, and we aren’t looking to sell.”

Reports further suggest Liverpool has stepped back from pursuing Álvarez due to his high valuation and Atlético’s reluctance to negotiate. The Spanish club reportedly won’t consider offers below €200 million (£167.3 million), far above Liverpool’s current transfer spending record.

While the Reds are exploring options to bolster their forward line—especially amid uncertainties around Darwin Núñez and Mohamed Salah—Álvarez no longer seems a realistic target. Instead, the club may shift focus to more feasible signings as they gear up for the new season under incoming manager Arne Slot.
