Leeds United have reportedly been granted permission to negotiate a summer transfer for Liverpool’s backup goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher. The move is supported by his national team coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, who emphasized the need for Kelleher to secure regular playing time to aid his development.
Hallgrimsson believes Leeds could be the perfect destination for the 26-year-old, noting that consistent first-team action is key to Kelleher’s progression and potential elevation to Ireland’s number one.
Leeds have been monitoring Kelleher’s status at Anfield for months, with previous reports indicating any transfer would depend on their promotion. Now that the club has secured a return to the Premier League, interest in the Liverpool keeper has intensified.
The push for a new goalkeeper comes amid concerns over Illan Meslier’s erratic form, which saw Karl Darlow replace him late in the Championship season. Leeds are looking to bolster their squad to remain competitive in the top flight, and Kelleher is a top priority.
Hallgrimsson told the *Irish Echo*, “Caoimhin has shown his quality in major competitions like the Premier League and Champions League. He needs to be somewhere he can start regularly—it’s not about the club, it’s about consistent minutes on the pitch.”
Although Kelleher has delivered strong performances for Liverpool, especially in cup matches, Alisson Becker’s presence has limited his league appearances. A switch to Leeds would allow him to step into a starting role and enhance his international prospects.
Liverpool are reportedly open to discussions, and Kelleher himself is said to be keen on finding a club where he can be the first-choice keeper. With Leeds back in the top tier, talks are expected to progress swiftly.
