Liverpool Eyeing ‘Genius’ Talent After Frimpong Deal, Could Be Summer’s Best Bargain
Liverpool are reportedly in advanced negotiations to secure another key player shortly after finalizing a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong.
So far, new manager Arne Slot has made just one signing—Federico Chiesa from Juventus in a budget-friendly deal. However, after guiding Liverpool to their 20th league title in his debut season, Slot is expected to receive strong backing during the transfer window.
A top priority will be finding a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer after his contract expires.
According to German outlet Kicker, Liverpool are close to sealing a €40 million transfer for Frimpong, who would sign a contract through 2030. But their summer activity likely won’t stop there.
Le Parisien reports that Liverpool are among three Premier League clubs to have shown interest in Lyon star Rayan Cherki, who has had an impressive season with 12 goals and 19 assists in 43 appearances. Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be monitoring the 21-year-old, who was once dubbed a “genius” and nearly joined Manchester United as a teenager.
Cherki was close to a move to Paris Saint-Germain last summer but changed his mind in favor of Borussia Dortmund. However, that move also fell through due to a failed agreement with Lyon.
Despite recently renewing his contract, Lyon have reportedly agreed to let Cherki leave for just €22.5 million (£19 million), making him a hot prospect in the current transfer market.
