Bayer 04 Leverkusen and head coach Xabi Alonso will part ways after over two and a half years together. The Spanish manager, who led the team to victory in the 2024 German championship, DFB Pokal, and Supercup, has requested the termination of his contract, which was originally set to run until the summer of 2026. The club will announce a successor at the appropriate time.
Werner Wenning, chairman of the Bayer 04 shareholders’ committee, praised Alonso’s contribution, stating, “Together with Xabi Alonso, we have written a remarkable success story, particularly with our unbeaten league title, which is unparalleled in German football.” He further emphasized Alonso’s role as an excellent ambassador for both the club and the Bundesliga, expressing the club’s gratitude.
CEO Fernando Carro reflected on the club’s sporting reputation, noting, “Under Xabi Alonso, Bayer 04 has gained international recognition. Our unbeaten league title, DFB Pokal win, Europa League final appearance, and Supercup victory fill us with immense pride.”
Sporting director Simon Rolfes called the Alonso era a “milestone” in the club’s development. He praised Alonso for assembling a team that showcased both talent and strong mentality. “We are proud of the club’s progress and wish Xabi all the best in his future endeavors,” he added.
