Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS Group, now a major player at Manchester United, also owns the French club OGC Nice, which is also pushing for a Champions League spot via Ligue 1.
UEFA rules prevent two clubs with shared ownership from playing in the same European competition. If Nice qualify ahead of United through Ligue 1, the English club could miss out on Champions League football, regardless of their Europa League result.
Though INEOS is reportedly working on adjusting its football structure to comply with UEFA rules, time is tight. With the Europa League final fast approaching, United must not only win the trophy but also prove they meet UEFA’s requirements.
The club’s legal team and executives are said to be working non-stop on this issue. UEFA is expected to make a final ruling after the domestic seasons wrap up, intensifying the pressure during an already critical period for United.
