Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has shared his opinion on how some of the club’s supporters booed Trent Alexander-Arnold during a recent match at Anfield.
During Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal last Sunday, 26-year-old Alexander-Arnold faced mixed reactions from the home crowd when he came on as a substitute. Some fans booed him after he announced that he would leave Liverpool when his contract expires in June 2025. While others showed support by applauding and chanting names like Conor Bradley and Steven Gerrard, the boos sparked controversy and debate.
Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher spoke out against the booing on Sky Sports, saying, “I was surprised by how many joined in. In my view, no player who has won trophies for Liverpool should be treated like that. Booing your own players during a match is something I don’t support.”
Salah also commented during a Sky Sports interview with Gary Neville, expressing his disappointment over the fans’ behavior. He said, “I think the fans were a bit harsh on him.”
Defending Alexander-Arnold, Salah described the negative reception as undeserved: “He gave everything for the fans and deserved respect.”
When asked if the reaction upset him, Salah admitted, “Definitely. I was shocked. This isn’t typical of Liverpool supporters, who have always respected players who have contributed even for a short time—especially someone like Trent, who’s been here for nearly 20 years. It shouldn’t end this way.”
Salah shared a personal story about advising Alexander-Arnold before his farewell, saying, “I told him not to look at me when he leaves because I really care about him. He’s done a lot for Liverpool and the city, and is one of the club’s greatest players.”
He also explained Alexander-Arnold’s reasons for leaving: “He told me he wants a new challenge. At only 25 or 26, and after winning multiple trophies, what else is there to achieve here? Staying mentally motivated for so long at one club is tough, even if you love it.”
Salah ended by wishing his teammate well and promising to keep in touch: “I hope the best for him and we will stay friends.”
