Liverpool have secured an agreement to sign Jeremie Frimpong as their new right-back. The Dutch international will join from Bayer Leverkusen after the Reds activated his €35 million release clause. Frimpong has agreed to a five-year contract, with his medical examination scheduled and personal terms fully settled.
Frimpong Left Out of Leverkusen Finale Ahead of Liverpool Transfer
Jeremie Frimpong was absent from Bayer Leverkusen’s final match of the season, as his transfer to Liverpool nears completion.
The 24-year-old is set to make a £30 million move to Anfield, potentially stepping in for Trent Alexander-Arnold. This would mark the first signing of the summer for new manager Arne Slot, kicking off what could be a very impactful transfer window.
On Saturday, Frimpong remained on the bench throughout Leverkusen’s last Bundesliga fixture against Mainz—Jurgen Klopp’s former club—with Leverkusen having already secured second place.
Despite the game ending in a 2-2 draw and Leverkusen pushing for a late winner, Frimpong did not feature, signaling that his time at the club has come to a close. The match also marked the end of Xabi Alonso’s tenure as Leverkusen manager, with the ex-Liverpool midfielder set to take over from Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.
A formal announcement from Liverpool seems imminent, although Arne Slot remained tight-lipped during his pre-match press conference before the game against Brighton.
“It’s going to be another boring answer,” Slot remarked.
“This season has mostly been about contract renewals. Now, everyone’s curious about our incoming signings. But as always, we don’t comment on players until the deal is finalized. Once that happens, you can ask me anything.”
Frimpong leaves Leverkusen having scored 30 goals and provided 44 assists in 190 matches. Like Alexander-Arnold, he’s more noted for his attacking contributions than his defensive play, boasting speed and end product that could make him a dynamic presence for Liverpool.
Fans will be pleased that he wasn’t risked in the final match, with confirmation of his transfer expected soon
