Toni Kroos Backs Arda Güler for Real Madrid’s Iconic Number 10 Shirt

In a statement that has stirred strong reactions in the football community, Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos endorsed Arda Güler as the rightful heir to Luka Modric’s prestigious number 10 jersey. As Modric nears retirement, speculation has intensified over who will inherit the shirt long associated with club legends like Puskás, Zidane, and Modric himself.

Speaking on his podcast Einfach mal Luppen, Kroos—who retired in 2024 after a decorated career—voiced his strong belief that the 19-year-old Turkish midfielder possesses the creativity, vision, and composure required for the role. Despite Güler’s limited appearances due to injuries and a crowded midfield lineup, Kroos praised the young talent’s flashes of brilliance, especially in La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

Güler joined Real Madrid from Fenerbahçe in 2023 and, while yet to secure a consistent starting position under coach Carlo Ancelotti, has shown promise. Kroos recalled their time playing together and highlighted Güler’s ability to control the game and create opportunities—traits reminiscent of Modric’s style.

Kroos’s endorsement comes at a key moment in Real Madrid’s transition, with him retired and Modric close to the end of his career. While Federico Valverde has taken over Kroos’s number 8 shirt, the number 10 remains a symbol of leadership and elite playmaking. Güler’s versatility as both a winger and central midfielder makes him a strong contender.

The football world has taken note. While some fans worry about the pressure such a shirt brings, others agree that Güler’s skill set makes him a natural fit. With Modric expected to retire soon, the 2025–26 season could be Güler’s chance to step into the spotlight—especially with Kroos’s backing marking him as the future of Madrid’s midfield.
