Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has commented on the transfer speculation surrounding Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.
At 22, Wirtz is expected to be one of the hottest properties in the upcoming summer transfer window. The young German has been instrumental for Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side, contributing 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 matches across all competitions this season.
Due to his standout performances, top European clubs such as Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Manchester City have shown interest.
According to journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic, Liverpool have reached out to Wirtz’s camp to show their intent, should the playmaker decide to leave Leverkusen and move to the Premier League. While Liverpool’s interest is long-standing, it’s still uncertain if Wirtz intends to leave Germany.
Although Bayern are seen as front-runners for his signature and the player’s representatives have also reportedly met with Manchester City, Hoeness made a surprising comment regarding the situation. As quoted by This Is Anfield, he said:
“What am I supposed to tell you now? You’ve been writing nonsense for weeks about him going to Manchester City, even though he was at Liverpool. At some point, we’ll provide you with facts — not more speculation!”
Liverpool Also Eyeing Wirtz’s Teammate Frimpong
In a separate development, Liverpool are close to sealing a deal for Jeremie Frimpong, Wirtz’s teammate at Leverkusen. The Dutch right-back, 24, is expected to join as a long-term replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Ornstein reported that Frimpong is preparing for a medical and has agreed to a five-year contract with Liverpool. The club will trigger his €35 million release clause.
Liverpool’s next match is scheduled for Monday night, where they’ll face Brighton & Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium
