According to journalist Alfredo Pedullà, Manchester United are ahead of Manchester City and Juventus in the race to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson.
The Red Devils are expected to look for a new midfielder during the summer window, especially with Christian Eriksen set to leave the club when his contract expires on June 30.
Rather than a creative playmaker, United are prioritizing a more defensively minded midfielder. Pedullà reports that fresh discussions have taken place regarding a potential move for Ederson.
Negotiations are anticipated to continue after the Europa League final. United have a head start on City and Juventus, having already initiated contact with the Brazilian international.
However, they still need to reach an agreement with Atalanta, who are reportedly demanding £50.5 million for the transfer.
Ederson, who can operate as a central or defensive midfielder, has maintained an 87% passing accuracy in Serie A this season. He’s averaged 5.5 duels won per game, along with 5.1 ball recoveries and 1.4 successful tackles.
Known for his tireless work ethic, the Brazilian has also demonstrated strong positioning and the ability to play effective long passes, making him a solid option for United’s midfield.
With Eriksen set to depart, United will still have Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, and Bruno Fernandes available for the attacking midfield role.
Therefore, the priority may shift toward signing a player with stronger defensive qualities to challenge Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro, and possibly Toby Collyer for a starting role next season.
Ederson could potentially serve as the long-term replacement for Casemiro, who may leave the club next year.
Although Casemiro has improved his performances in recent months and could remain for the final year of his £350,000-per-week contract, United are unlikely to extend his stay beyond that
