Darwin Núñez Close to Leaving Liverpool for Atletico Madrid

Darwin Núñez Close to Leaving Liverpool for Atletico Madrid

Liverpool forward Darwin Núñez is reportedly on the verge of departing Anfield, with a verbal agreement already in place for a move to Atletico Madrid, according to Spanish sources.

The Uruguayan international has seen limited opportunities under new manager Arne Slot this season, starting only eight Premier League matches. Liverpool are willing to let the 25-year-old go but may struggle to recover the full £64 million they initially paid Benfica in 2022 — a deal that could rise to £85 million with add-ons.

Cadena SER reports that Atletico have spoken with Núñez, who has expressed a clear desire to join Diego Simeone’s squad. All terms with the player are believed to be settled, leaving only the transfer fee to be negotiated with Liverpool.

Núñez is also attracting interest from Napoli and clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are close to making their first signing of the summer, with Jeremie Frimpong completing a medical. The Bayer Leverkusen right-back, with a €35m (£29.5m) release clause, is seen as a potential successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold. The club is also pursuing Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.
