Manchester United fans have reacted strongly following the team’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, calling for the immediate sale of four players.
Despite both clubs enduring disappointing Premier League seasons — finishing 16th and 17th respectively — they clashed in the final of UEFA’s secondary competition in Bilbao, where a Champions League spot was at stake.
The tense and disjointed match ended with Spurs narrowly beating United 1-0, thanks to Brennan Johnson’s first-half goal. This victory not only secured Tottenham’s first trophy in 17 years but also fulfilled manager Ange Postecoglou’s promise to deliver silverware in his second year.
United’s performance was widely viewed as lackluster, with the team falling short on the big stage for their first Europa League defeat of the season. Frustrated fans took to social media, demanding a major summer overhaul starting with four underperforming players.
Goalkeeper André Onana, under scrutiny all season for repeated errors, faced renewed criticism for his display. Luke Shaw was also singled out for his slow reaction during the match-winning goal.
One fan posted on X: “Onana needs to be sold and never play for this club again, and Shaw.” Another added: “Onana must go this summer. He can’t command his defence—terrible.”
Mason Mount, despite his semi-final contributions, also faced backlash for an ineffective showing in the final. “We need to get rid of Mount, man. I’ve tried,” wrote one supporter. Another described his performance as “shockingly bad.”
Striker Rasmus Højlund also came under fire after being neutralized by Spurs defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. “If we’re serious about rebuilding next season, players like Shaw, Maguire, Onana, and Højlund should be sold, even for cheap,” one fan posted. Another bluntly said Højlund “should never wear a United shirt again and needs to be sold ASAP.”
