In a candid interview with Catalunya Radio, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco opened up about the club’s current approach to transfers, contract renewals, and future plans. A key highlight was his clear confirmation that Paris Saint-Germain had shown interest in signing one of Barcelona’s young talents, Lamine Yamal.
Deco did not hesitate when asked about Yamal’s future and PSG’s level of interest. “Yes, last season PSG approached us about signing him,” Deco revealed. “This season, no offers have come in, but our priority remains unchanged. We want Lamine to stay with us. We haven’t considered any proposals because the player himself isn’t interested in listening.”
This came amid growing speculation about Yamal’s next contract, with rumors suggesting the teenager was demanding to be the highest-paid player at the club. Deco quickly dismissed these claims: “Lamine never asked to be the top earner. We handle contract talks through agents, and what matters most to him is his happiness.”
Reflecting personally, Deco compared Yamal’s maturity to his own son. “He’s very mature for a 17-year-old. I have a son his age, and when I see Lamine, I see someone confident but still young. He needs to enjoy life and his youth.”
Regarding Yamal’s future, Deco emphasized Barcelona’s philosophy: “Whether he’s 17 or 26, football should be fair. A player of his talent deserves a contract that reflects his true value—not necessarily the biggest money, but one appropriate for his level and potential.”
Deco confirmed the club’s long-term commitment to Yamal: “His next contract will likely cover four to six years. For me, Barcelona is the best place for him. This is his home.”
The interview also touched on head coach Hansi Flick, whom Deco praised for bringing stability and structure to the team. “Flick has identified the right players, helped them develop, and created a solid squad. He’s happy here and well-connected to the club; I don’t see him leaving anytime soon.”
When asked about the team’s ambitions, Deco said, “We knew the squad could improve. Getting close to the Champions League semi-finals last season showed us where we needed to step up. I believe we have what it takes to compete.”
