Manchester United Complete Second Summer Signing, Eye Jean-Philippe Mateta as Next Target
Manchester United have confirmed their second signing of the summer, with a top European talent worth £80 million set to be unveiled as the newest addition to the squad today.
Meanwhile, United are also reportedly interested in Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, as per French outlet L’Equipe. The club is eager to strengthen its forward options, with current strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling to deliver.
United have shown strong interest in Mateta, who enters the final year of his Palace contract this July. The 27-year-old is holding off on a contract extension and is waiting for formal offers, hoping to secure a spot in France’s 2026 World Cup squad.
Under manager Oliver Glasner, Mateta has flourished, scoring 36 goals since last season, including 17 this term. His goal conversion rate stands at 21%, and he’s impressed with both his hold-up play and pressing.
Given his Premier League experience—114 appearances—Mateta appears to be a more reliable option than Ipswich striker Liam Delap. While Delap has scored 12 goals this season, his limited top-level experience could be a concern.
United previously took a similar gamble with Rasmus Hojlund, whose performance has dipped in his second season. With Mateta’s £40 million valuation and contract expiring in just over a year, United could secure a solid striker at a reduced price.
