Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has raised serious concerns over Darwin Nunez, calling him potentially the worst signing in Liverpool’s history.
Nunez arrived at Anfield in 2022 for a record-breaking £85 million from Benfica, signing a six-year deal. Despite brief moments of quality, the Uruguayan striker has largely failed to justify his hefty price tag, scoring only five goals during the Premier League-winning season.
Now, it appears Liverpool are ready to offload him, with reports from Spain suggesting he’s already held talks with Atletico Madrid and reached a verbal agreement. However, no transfer fee has been finalized, and Atletico may face competition from Saudi Arabian clubs.
“When you spend £85 million, you expect guaranteed goals,” Hamann told Betting Lounge. “That hasn’t happened, and now you just hope to recover some of the investment.”
Despite Nunez’s underwhelming contribution, Hamann acknowledges that he was still part of a title-winning squad. He views Liverpool’s continued success, even with a misfiring marquee signing, as a sign of the club’s strong foundations.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are reportedly looking to sign German star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and are also interested in Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku. Hamann expressed sympathy for Nkunku, who has struggled with injuries since joining Chelsea, but still believes he has the potential to thrive elsewhere.
“He’s a fantastic player,” Hamann said. “If he stays injury-free and joins a club where he’s central to the attack, I think he could easily score 25 goals a season. He just needs the right environment to succeed.”
