Jamie Carragher Questions Szoboszlai’s Mentality Ahead of Palace Clash

As Liverpool concluded their Premier League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace in a match that held no title implications, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher didn’t shy away from criticizing one of the team’s key players.

Crystal Palace opened the scoring early with a ninth-minute goal from Ismaila Sarr, and Liverpool’s situation worsened when Ryan Gravenberch was sent off just before the 70th minute. Mohamed Salah later equalized in the 84th minute, tying the Premier League record for most goal involvements in a season (47), alongside legends Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

Although Liverpool had already secured the title weeks earlier, Carragher used the opportunity to critique Dominik Szoboszlai, raising concerns about his mentality and role in the squad, especially with Liverpool targeting Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz during the upcoming transfer window.

Carragher took issue with a specific moment during the game when Szoboszlai passed to Salah instead of shooting himself. According to Carragher, this hesitation reflects a mentality issue: “He had a good chance at the edge of the box and passed it — that says something about his mindset.”

Szoboszlai, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2023, has shown potential but struggled to consistently perform. He was subbed off in the 61st minute for Darwin Nunez, and while he made a few key passes and completed all his long balls, he failed to hit the target with his only shot.

With Szoboszlai contracted through 2028 and earning £150,000 per week, Liverpool might consider his future carefully, especially if Wirtz arrives. Reducing that wage bill could also help financially.
