Liverpool Legend Alan Hansen to Present Premier League Trophy in Emotional Return to Anfield

Alan Hansen, a revered Liverpool icon, will return to Anfield on Sunday for a poignant moment as he presents the Premier League trophy to captain Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool’s final game of the season against Crystal Palace.

In a heartfelt gesture, the club has invited the 69-year-old to play a central role in their title celebrations. Hansen, who battled a serious illness last year, will hand over the trophy in front of the home crowd following the 4pm kickoff.

The former defender, who made 620 appearances and won eight league titles with the Reds, was hospitalized in June 2024 but has since recovered. Earlier this year, he received an MBE from Prince William at Windsor Castle, recognizing his impact on football and broadcasting.

During his illustrious 14-year Liverpool career, Hansen won three European Cups, two FA Cups, and three League Cups in addition to his league successes. After retiring, he became a prominent football pundit, best known for his time on BBC’s Match of the Day.

Also taking part in the celebration are Mark and Jo McVeigh from the Owen McVeigh Foundation, a charity honoring their late son and working with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to support families of children with serious illnesses.

Van Dijk, who recently extended his contract with Liverpool for two more years, is expected to relish the opportunity to share the moment with Hansen, a fellow former captain.
