Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly considering moves for Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho and Antony as Erik ten Hag, newly appointed as manager, begins reshaping the team following his return to management.
Ten Hag, who was sacked by Manchester United in October 2024 after a poor start to the season, has taken over from Xabi Alonso and is tasked with maintaining Leverkusen’s recent success. At his unveiling, he expressed excitement about the opportunity, saying he aims to build a competitive and ambitious squad during this transitional phase.
That transition could involve major player departures, including Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, who are both expected to secure high-value transfers abroad. Combined, their sales could bring in over £150 million, providing Ten Hag with significant funds for new signings.
According to German outlet Kicker, Leverkusen — in collaboration with Ten Hag — have drawn up a shortlist of potential recruits, with Garnacho and Antony among the names being considered.
Garnacho, reportedly high on Leverkusen’s list, is believed to be unsettled under new United boss Ruben Amorim. Although still under contract and carrying a sizable price tag, Garnacho is viewed as an ideal target due to his relatively modest wages. However, he is currently not considered available for transfer, with his future depending on Amorim’s vision and United’s stance.
Antony, on the other hand, seems a more attainable option. The Brazilian winger, who previously played under Ten Hag at both Ajax and United, has revived his form while on loan at Real Betis. Scoring eight goals in 24 appearances, Antony has attracted renewed interest, and Ten Hag may be interested in a reunion in Germany to help reignite the player’s career.
While Antony struggled to impress at United — scoring only 12 goals in 94 appearances — his familiarity with Ten Hag’s system could be crucial in quickly implementing the coach’s strategies at Leverkusen. His European and Premier League experience also adds value, especially as a potential replacement for Frimpong.
Ten Hag’s interest in former players like Garnacho and Antony reflects his preference for working with trusted individuals who understand his style and expectations. Though no deals are finalized, the discussions signal Leverkusen’s serious interest and intent.
Leverkusen are keen to avoid being a one-hit wonder after winning their first Bundesliga title. With Ten Hag at the helm, the club is focused on staying competitive both domestically and in Europe.
